Refuge Home 3

Take a Peek at Refuge Home Life

Home is being loved “as you are.” It is that safe space of belonging where each one can battle his or her struggles without shame while also discovering his or her purpose and place in the world. Home is forever a place of refuge.

Get to Know our Housemothers

Ruth Yanely Maldonado

I’ve worked at the Refuge for five years and three months. I am God-fearing and dedicated to my God, my family, and my job. I am friendly, responsible, and servant-hearted. I love to cook and lead the Refuge when we have devotionals. I have a beautiful family - my husband, son, and daughter, who to this day have lived lives that bring honor to me and to God.

So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isa 41:10

Please pray for my children that God grants the deep desires of their heart, and for my parents and (six!) siblings, that they would come to know Christ as I have.

Vilma Carcamo

I’ve worked at the Refuge for more than four years. I am God-fearing, servant-hearted, and I love learning new things. I am a single mother with two boys, one in college and the other in high school. It’s been a hard road for me to provide them an education, and I’m really proud of them. Edgardo y Gustavo have turned out well, despite my absences from them while at work. Blessings on all of you who help support God’s work in this place!

I can do all things through Him who gives me strength. Phil 4:13

Please pray for my sons, that they continue to allow God to direct their lives, that they follow His paths, and that God gives them strength to meet their goals.

Celebrate each Journey

We find ways to value all of life’s experiences. We are a home of 8 teenagers, which is no easy thing. Luz Marina is our “first born” and is sweet, funny, athletic and a genius in technology. Lucidalia can be moody and gets sad easily, but she is also loving and athletic. She’s a great reader and loves English. Victor is really easy to get along with and always ready to help. He’s athletic, good at science, and a bit of a tattletale. Jesus is shy and very neat; she loves to sing and read and is great at technology like her sister. Mariano is very likable, smart, messy, and athletic. He is kind and sensitive to others. Yefrin is a natural leader - charismatic and great at science. Ismael has the most incredible, neat handwriting and likes soccer and music. He is learning life skills that continue to help him become more sociable. Genesis is easygoing, very independent, and maternal. She likes to read and is great at Spanish.

Discover their Dreams

Take a peek at the future that each resident envisions for himself/herself: Luz Marina wants to have her own small business where she teaches computer classes, and she also wants to teach music. Lucidalia wants to be an artist and travel to other countries to learn more about art and culture. Victor and Yefrin both want to be agricultural engineers because they love to work with animals and tend crops. Jesus wants to be a foreign language teacher. Mariano dreams of being an architect and his sister Genesis wants to be a psychologist. Ismael wants to be a preacher and tell people about Jesus. Every single one of them mention that they want to support their families and make their community better.

Pray for Tomorrow

1. We are a home with special needs. We manage multiple medications for epilepsy and ADHD, and also perform OT and speech/language services in our home. These residents see medical specialists and a psychologist on a regular basis.

2. Transitions. Next year Yefrin and Genesis will be entering middle school. Lucidalia and Luz Marina will reside in our home for young adults, as they “age out” of government custody. We will continue their residential and academic support until they can become independent professionals. We are looking for additional support for their college funds.

You make family life possible! Thank you for your support!
