Growing Coffee - Cultivating Relationship

The Coffee Harvest

High in the mountains of La Botija in southern Honduras, a coffee farmer spends an entire year tending the crop with his family.

Then harvest comes, and the clock starts running because the coffee cherries must be processed immediately or risk total loss.

Without some essential resources, many small family farms cannot process their own harvest. They may have little choice but to sell their coffee cherries quickly and for far less than they could otherwise earn. This happens because they simply lack a few basic things to maximize their harvest and to ultimately expand their small coffee farm.

Mission Lazarus is changing this reality by radically changing the economic outlook for 50 families in the region. Working with small, family coffee farms, we provide a depulper, fermentation tank and drying patio to help these farmers process their own coffee, earn more from their harvest and build greater economic stability.

But this is about much more than coffee. It's about what happens when we show up and do life with these families.

For Mission Lazarus, helping someone build a sustainable livelihood has never been separate from sharing the hope of Jesus. We believe the gospel is shared through our words, but also through our willingness to listen, serve, and remain engaged long enough for relationships to grow.

That's why we invite service teams from the US into this work. They bring experience in construction, agriculture, medicine, business, education and other fields and work shoulder to shoulder with Honduran families. Knowledge is shared. Hands get dirty together. Meals and stories are exchanged. Friendships begin. Barriers come down.

Local families bring their labor and experience. Visiting teams bring their skills and willingness to serve. And our Honduran staff provides the long-term presence that continues after the US teams return home.

And sometimes a relationship that begins while pouring a coffee drying patio on the side of a mountain becomes an open door to share the hope of Jesus.
