Hope in an Unexpected Place: How a Simple Latrine Transformed a Family’s Life
What if the most unexpected gift could change your life forever?
In the small village of La Danta, located just 30 minutes from Namasigüe, Choluteca, most families struggle to meet their basic needs. The intense heat scorches the land, and nearly everyone relies on subsistence farming, growing corn to feed their families. But since corn alone doesn’t provide enough income, many also find work in fields harvesting melon, watermelon, sugarcane, or on shrimp farms.
For Rolando Mercado, his wife Idalia Guido, and their two daughters, Zohely and María, life has always been a challenge. With limited resources, they lacked something most of us take for granted—a safe, dignified place to use the restroom.
When a Mission Lazarus pastor first visited their home, he didn’t just bring the Word of God—he brought an answer to their prayers.
"God has sent you a latrine," he told them.
Rolando and Idalia were overwhelmed with joy. Never in their lives did they imagine having a proper, clean latrine for their family. Something so simple—yet so life-changing.
But Mission Lazarus didn’t just build them a latrine. The pastor also invited them to a “House of Peace”—a gathering where families come together to study the Bible, pray, and grow in their faith. Today, this family is not only experiencing better sanitation but also spiritual transformation.
It’s incredible how God can use something as simple as a latrine to open hearts.
Through the work of Mission Lazarus, the most vulnerable families in remote villages are experiencing hope, dignity, and the love of Christ—one small but powerful act at a time.
