More Than a School

Six-year-old Bervens Exavier is the youngest child in a single parent family living in extreme poverty in Haiti. Since enrolling at Lazarus Academy Haiti in 2023, he has found something every child deserves, a safe place where he is loved, welcomed, and given the opportunity to learn.

For Bervens, Lazarus Academy Haiti provides more than a classroom. It is a refuge. It is family. It is hope.

Earlier this year, after heavy rains made travel difficult, his mother had no money for transportation. However, Bervens was determined to be there eventually arriving at the school around 10:00 that morning. 

When school staff later spoke with his mother, she explained that she couldn't persuade him to stay home. She knows that at Lazarus Academy her son will learn, will be cared for and receive two nutritious meals each day. For her, Lazarus Academy is more than a school. It is a source of peace in the midst of uncertainty.
